Santorini is one of the most famous greek islands which has been visited by an
amazing number of tourists from all over the world while being really popular to the Greek people as well. It is located in the Aegean Sea and it belongs to the Cycladic island complex. The main reason for its great popularity is the caldera which was created after a disastrous volcanic eruption that occurred almost 2,000,000 years ago. The result was, apart from the entire destruction of the settlements of the island and the burring of a great civilization under tones of lava, was the creation of an imposing scenery, the caldera cliff, which stand there even today causing the admiration of any human who stairs at it breathless!
Locals took advantage of the high cliff of the caldera in order to build their new settlements on the top of it. At least, they would be protected against invaders… Nowadays, there is no reason to get afraid of pirates or other attackers yet these settlements are still there offering an excellent view to the caldera. Oia, is one of these villages built on the steep cliff and at the same time it is very famous for its magnificent view which creates a romantic ambience, especially during the sunset time. This is why Oia is also famous for its sunset view.
The natural beauty of Oia village in combination with its traditional architecture which consists of white washed houses, old mansions where captains used to live, narrow streets and blue domed churches, make this village unique thus extremely popular to the visitors. Photos and postal cards with the sunset of Oia, the caldera view and the churches with the blue domes have travelled all over the world advertising the incomparable beauty of the village and making even more people wishing to visit it!
Hiking route Oia-Imerovigli
Even though Santorini has been photographed by millions of people and every single corner of its spectacular caldera has been captured, there is a part of its beauty less popular and less famous. It concerns the paths along its plains and the routes that connect one region with another.
Oia was given its present name in 1930s. Its previous names were Theraion Polis (city of the Therans), Saint Nikolas Castle and Pano Meria.
The area of Oia, including Tholos and Foinikia hosts around 70 churches. Some of them have been built and others have been excavated just like the cave houses.
The hotels in Oia are considered to be the most privileged all over Santorini. Even though the caldera buildings were seriously damaged in 1956 due to the earthquake, new buildings wre erected again at the same position given that the view they offer is incomparable.
The architecture of Oia village seems to have been divided into two different styles: the captains’ houses or kapetanospita and the cave houses or hyposkafa or oia canaves.
